How to Select a Monitoring System

This section describes steps to follow when evaluating an environmental monitoring application, and selecting the best system for the application. The first four steps pertain to filling out the Engineered Systems request forms or the Quick-Start proposal request form. The remaining pages in this site will assist you in evaluating the information, making the equipment selection, and considering any other options or equipment that you may need.

Step 1 - Define the problem:
What type of exposure needs to be detected and at what concentration?

List the types of gases, vapors, particulates, noise, etc. that you need to detect (the "target" exposure), and over what ranges you need to detect them. What is the reason for detection? Is it to prevent an explosion? To prevent asphyxiation? To prevent employee exposure to toxic gases or vapors? To monitor noise levels? To control a process? At what levels do you wish to take action, and what is the action that needs to be taken?

Step 2 - Define the area to be monitored:

The area to be monitored must be examined carefully and the questions on the application survey must be carefully considered and answered. This will assist the Argus Application Engineers to make the most informed selection of the proper system and accessories to solve your environmental monitoring application. What is the overall size and shape of space? What is the classification of the area? Do the sensors need to be explosion proof? Intrinsically safe? Weather resistant? Corrosion resistant? Are we monitoring an enclosed space (duct, pit, etc.) or an open room?

Step 3 - Define the area the in which controller will be installed, and what action the controller must take:

The site where the controller will be installed must be carefully considered, and the questions regarding this area answered on the applications survey. Also consider what action or information you will expect the controller to provide to you, if any, and if you might possibly need to expand the system in the future. This will help us to select the most appropriate controller for your needs.

Step 4 - How to determine the quantity of sensors needed and sensor placement:
